If you bet show but the horse wins, do you get show money or win money?

You get any money the horse earns. Win, place, show.

  3. Actually - if you bet to show - you only get the show money.

Thus if the payoff was $10 win / $6 place / $4 show - you would only get the $4 show money.

Thanks to whichever one of you is correct.

    Indeed.
If you got the win money for betting show, why would anyone ever bet to win? Bet show and give yourself three chances and still have a shot at the big prize! Nope. You want win money, you bet to win.

Joe, Evil is quite correct. Think about what I said above.

Portland Meadows racetrack out here is giving away Big Brown "win" tickets to everyone who shows up for the simulcast.

Somewhat obscured by the Eight Belles tragedy, has been the number of other top contending 3-year-olds who were pulled out or slowed by injuries this spring. Big Brown is a great horse but wasn't considered a top pick for the crown until other horses were pulled out. I'm hoping the racing industry realizes a horse needs to be able to make it to the gate in order to make any money and will change their breeding philosophies.

Here were the odds at the end of advance wagering Friday at Belmont. I don't see anything surprising.

    1. Big Brown, 1-5
    2. Guadalcanal, 88-1
    3. Macho Again, 69-1
    4. Denis of Cork, 19-1
    5. Casino Drive, 9-2
    6. Da' Tara, 99-1
    7. Tale of Ekati, 20-1
    8. Anak Nakal, 87-1
    9. Ready's Echo, 72-1
    10. Icabad Crane, 72-1

There's no way that Da'Tara will go off at longer odds than Guadalcanal.

If you want to bet the Belmont, don't put Casino Drive on your tickets. He's looked horrible in his two workouts, and now he has a "stone bruise". If healthy, he could beat Big Brown, but he's not.

Wow. It might just pay off to put $2 on the long shots to win. 88-1 odds, good God!

Where did you find those odds?

Time to post this again--Sexretariat's '73 run for the ages. Jaw dropping.

I watched this on TV as a 10 year old kid, probably not realizing the full magnitude, but in a way, understanding how special an event I was watching.

I've never seen anything like it since.

But, this year, I've seen a lot of Big Red in Big Brown.

One more time, my friend, one more time.

GodDAMN. I got chills watching that video. Look how high the jockey is riding. He never had to go to the whip.

In that SI piece after Secretariat died -- one of the best stories I ever read in that magazine -- the necropsy showed Big Red's heart was nearly a third bigger than the average thoroughbred's heart. He could blaze, and last.
