Well.... one case IS an error, because you CAN assume the out.

Assuming the out comes into play when a team tries to complete a DP.

Here's the pertinent section of the rule book. Make of it what you will.

Sac and an error if it's on the throw.

    This makes little sense, too.

If you choose to eschew an easy out at first base and get zero outs on the play, there HAS to be an error. The fielder making the choice made an error. Chose poorly.

Significant flaw in baseball's scoring rules.

Errors in baseball/softball apply to physical errors, and not to the mental variety. If a fielder handles a ball cleanly and makes an accurate throw that does not result in an out, there is no error charged on the play.

    Ridiculous, as I said.

I know I'm jumping on here late, but I just got back from state basketball.

This is an easy one: SAC, E-6. AND you give the pitcher an assist.

Now we have assists on a play without an out?

Baseball, despite its greatness, reminding me of its widespread idiocy as Opening Day beckons.

If the throw goes to third and the runner beats it out it would be a fielder's choice. Since the throw went to third, the batter reaches on a fielder's choice. Score an E6 for the dropped throw and since the runner would have been out at third an assist on the play.

Now if the throw went to first base and was dropped than score the sacrifice.

Anytime a throw, in the scorer's judgement, would have resulted in an out but was dropped for an error on the catch, the player gets an assist.

Now if they start giving assists in basketball for great passes that result in brick shots, I'm quitting.
