What is the deal with today's bike shorts?

I put my bike stuff away about 12 years ago because of family time constraints and no easy place to ride. In October, I decided that I was getting too out of shape and dieting alone wasn't working and I cleaned up one of the bikes in the barn and started riding again.

The neat thing was, I already had just about everything I needed was bought 15 years ago and stored in big Tupperware boxes.

Father's Day rolls around and the kiddos ask what I might like. I suggest perhaps a new pair of bike shorts.

They arrived, Tuesday (Kiddos can never meet a deadline), and when I unfolded them, they had massive bike seat-shaped padding in the crotch.

I've always ridden in chamois and synthetic chamois, lightly padded shorts.

So, I figure I'd just go to a bike shop and buy some of those.

Three bike shops later, there are none to be found.

    When did bicycle shorts mutate?

Should I quit being a geezer and embrace the giant diaper?

Or, might I be happier trying triathlon shorts?
