Yeah, I've heard Hurricanes call Eric Staal "Staalsy" and Rod Brind'Amour "Brindy" and former Cane Erik Cole is "Colesy." At least Cam Ward is "Wardo" but that's not that much better. Alex Ovechkin is "Ovie"

Steve "Bye-Bye" Balboni was one of my favs

You can blame Chris "Boomer" Berman for the dearth of quality nick-names

Even 'Sid the Kid' is paltry by the standards set by our forefathers.

Big Baby Jesus is good. But I'm not sure it's a popular one. :D

Had a similar thing happen in Britain many years ago.

Paul Gascoigne, a talented but troubled soccer player, got the nickname 'Gazza'.

From then on, abbreviating and adding 'zza' to someone's first or last name became ridiculously en vogue.

The Great One and Le Magnifique are two of the better hockey ones from recent years.

Yes, most of the nicknames came from the press box if I remember correctly.

"Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuh, DMill, J Cro and E."

Grantland Rice hates the Bible! He can't call it the Bible! He can only call it "dramatic lore!"
