The Knicks aren't the worst performing team in Jimmy Dolan's organization:

With one problem out of the way, James L. Dolan quickly turned to another. On Thursday night, just two days after introducing Phil Jackson as the new president of his beleaguered New York Knicks, Mr. Dolan, executive chairman of the Madison Square Garden Company, found himself assessing the performance of another troubled property: the musical extravaganza “Heart and Lights.”

The heavily advertised show, starring the Rockettes in their first spring production at Radio City Music Hall since 1997, was scheduled to start this Thursday, and Mr. Dolan was watching a final run-through. He grew increasingly anxious over what he saw, and he was not alone. A close friend, the movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, was by his side sharing similar concerns.

The weak spot was not the Rockettes, whose high-stepping routines were praised by one of Mr. Dolan’s lieutenants for their “energy and excitement.” Nor was it the sets, which included a 26-foot-tall replica of the Statue of Liberty, high-tech puppets and lifelike talking lions outside the New York Public Library. It was the show’s story line and, to a lesser extent, its songs that fell short of expectations.

So on Friday morning, after two years of work and a cost of $25 million, Mr. Dolan pulled the plug and ordered an overhaul. Instead of opening this week and closing on May 4, “Heart and Lights” is now scheduled to debut in 2015.

It is virtually unheard-of for a multimillion-dollar show to be postponed on the eve of previews. In this case, more than 100,000 ticket holders will have to be paid refunds, a large cast has been left in limbo and Radio City has been left dark for five weeks. In combination, those effects could lead to millions of dollars in additional losses.

Jimmy's got a new album. Sounds promising. Very socially relevant.

The band was warming up when the lead singer arrived at a Midtown studio shortly after 4 p.m. Monday.

He dropped his briefcase, practically sprinted to the microphone stand at the front of the room, and began tapping away at a red tambourine. He wore a fedora.

“Let’s take it from the fiddle solo,” he said.

The music career of James L. Dolan has been the source of mild fascination for people who are far more familiar with his positions as the president and chief executive of Cablevision and the owner of the Knicks and the Rangers.

Critics have not always been charitable. But with his band, JD & the Straight Shot, releasing an album this month, Dolan has been back in the studio to prepare for a series of concerts, including one scheduled for Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, a building he owns, as the opening act for the Eagles.

“I always said I wasn’t going to do it,” he said of playing the Garden for the first time, “but this record made me do it.”

On his new album, “Where I’ve Been,” Dolan croons about politics and race, love and mortality. One song called “Under That Hood” explores the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, which Dolan said he considered an American tragedy. (“It’s all good / Under my hood / So misunderstood,” goes the chorus.)

“There’s literally nowhere I won’t go,” Dolan said in an interview.
