    I'm not sure that matters.

In my hypothetical, the punishment reflects forfeiture of the entire season, not just the Series.

Hard to strip away the World Series. Why not the NCAA route? Ban them from the playoffs for the next two or three years?

Risberg wasn’t a gentleman. The Swede was a hard guy.

Wondering if one of the many smart people here can identify the last time a championship was vacated in a pro sport.

It really doesn't make sense that they aren't doing anything to Beltran. It sounds like he was a prominent participant. Of course, only the Mets could hire a new manager and have it come out that he cheated before he manages his first game.

Question. Assuming that the Black Sox scandal of throwing games for personal gain is the standard. What's the worst cheating in baseball, gambling aside. Is it stealing signs? Is it corking a bat? Is it manipulating the ball? Is it steroids?

This might be it because it's team-wide and condoned by the team's power structure. Corking bats or scuffed baseballs or steroids were individual offenses condoned by players across the sport and not necessarily organized by management. The Manfred report says the Astros players conducted the program, but it suggests Cora devised and introduced it. Hinch made a show of opposition but knew it was going on and did not order its termination.

They can't strip the Astros of the 2017 title or ban them from postseason because such discipline wasn't on the books -- at least I don't think it was -- at the time the offenses were committed. Going forward, however, a postseason ban would be an excellent deterrent. Vote it into existence now and ut everybody on notice. Of course if the Yankees or Red Sox or Cubs or Walgreens or Dodgers were to get caught, they'd be forgiven.
