This should appear on the APSE board sometime this evening:

Newspaper: York (Pa.) Daily Record/Sunday News

    Job listing: Assistant Sports Editor

Contact: Chris Otto, Sports Editor, cotto@ydr.com

    Phone: (717) 771-2064

The current Assistant Sports Editor at the York Daily Record/Sunday News has been promoted to Visual Editor for the newsroom, and we are seeking a talented individual to become our new Assistant Sports Editor. This is a management position.

We are a seven-day morning newspaper in southcentral Pennsylvania. This is a MediaNews Group-owned newspaper with circulations of 47,000 daily and 90,000 Sunday.

Our primary coverage areas include local high school sports, local college sports, Penn State football, the York Revolution minor-league baseball team, hunting and and dirt-track racing/NASCAR. Because of our location, we must balance coverage of MLB (Orioles, Phillies) and NFL (Steelers, Ravens, Eagles) throughout the year.

The Assistant Sports Editor's other responsibilities will include:

-- Working nights and serving as the leader and manager of our three full-time sports copy editors/paginators. This will involve slotting or desking responsibilities many nights and advance work on projects, packages and Sunday content.

-- Implementing design according to our typographical manual, monitoring sections to assure that policies are followed and training and coaching both new and veteran sports copy editors on design and style.

-- Taking the lead on the editing and design of many enterprise projects, wrappers and special sections (including our 56-page high school football tab) throughout the year

-- Helping to guide our expanding Web presence, which includes www.ydr.com (our main news site), exchange.ydr.com (our community forum) and www.thelineupcard.com (our primary sports blog).

Send resume, references and your best design clips to Chris Otto, Sports Editor, York Daily Record/Sunday News, 1891 Loucks Road, York, Pa. 17408. Or, better yet, e-mail those materials to cotto@ydr.com.

Update: APSE hasn't had time to post this advertisement yet on its Web site (hey, it's the holidays!), but this is a legitimate opening and we are now accepting applications and looking to move quickly on this.

Although I'm still fairly new at YDR's sister paper just down the road, my experience with Chris and the rest of the sports staff has been nothing but positive. The writing is phenomenal, IMO, and the pay is pretty good for the sports journalism field, from what I hear at least.

And York has the Harley Davidson plant. What else do you need?

Why is there such a big difference between the daily and Sunday circulation?

FYI: We are still in the process of reviewing the applications that we received (about 15-20) and are starting to contact the top candidates this week. We can still review and assess any new applicants who submit their material by the end of the week.

As our search and assessment of existing candidates continue, we're clarifying our vision for what we want this job to be as we move into the future, and we have updated the job description accordingly....

    ==========

The York Daily Record/Sunday News is seeking a talented individual to become our new Assistant Sports Editor. This is a management position. Applicants should have a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience at a daily newspaper or news organization.

Our newsroom and 13-member sports department are in the midst of aggressive restructuring, to position ourselves for success as a 24/7 news organization that focuses on more than just the daily newspaper. We are continuing to increase our profile on the Internet and in other new media formats. Because of that, we are especially interested in candidates with Web and multimedia skills and background.

This position will be a mix of day and night shifts -- most likely three night shifts and two day shifts. We are seeking someone versatile enough to tackle the very different duties that the day and night shifts would involve.

Night shifts would involve serving as the leader and manager of our three full-time sports copy editors/paginators. This will involve slotting or desking responsibilities and advance work on projects, packages and Sunday content. Would also oversee the continuing transition to posting more breaking local sports news (high schools scores, etc.) onto our Web site as it occurs at night.

Day shifts would involve updating the local sports budget, serving as assigning editor when needed, editing some stories, aggressively posting short breaking news stories on our Web site (and sending out e-mail alerts when warranted), and some advance pagination work on enterprise projects and sections.

Please send resume, references and your best design clips to:

I think I did this job a few stops back. The variety would be interesting, and there are real cities with a couple of hours. Sounds like a manager who doesn't spend much time in org-chart meetings.

    Any news on this one?

*other than "(I'm) hired!" of course.
