On the remote island, and I assume these five can load up on supplies before leaving:

Trauma surgeon (might as well prepare for the worst)
Old sailor (see: Quint from "Jaws")
Horticulturist (with knowledge of said or similar island)
    Phil Plait (astronomer)
Adam Savage (maker, stand-up comic, all-around good egg)

If you're talking a journalist who can't do anything else, yes, they would be fairly ineffective -- but they would hopefully write a good book after the year ends. Someone like Inky_Wretch would be a fine choice, though.

I'm not sure how good doctor will be with no tools or medicine. General practitioner can do a good job of telling me, "wow, you need to go to OR right away. Too bad we don't have one."
    If remote island:
    1. engineer (desalination knowledge a must)
    2. fisherman (we will eat well every night)
    3. architect (good shelter)
    4. sailor (assuming I am trying to be rescued)
    5. soldier (if I am anticipating trouble) If not, then probably cook.
I would trade soldier/cook for a jack of all trades guy who hangs out at Home Depot every weekend, but I wasn't sure that fit with the parameters of the game.

Stuck for one year? No chance of rescue or escape ...

    A professional spearfisherman
Survival TV host (Les Stroud or Bear Gryllis)
Astronomer (See, that's the Ursa major.)
Philosopher (See, that's what Kant was saying!)
    Doctor

You're not trying to escape or get rescued.

I'd choose the general practitioner because of the, uh, general information at your disposal. Over a year, you'd probably deal with colds, cuts, random maladies that wouldn't be serious but would be subject to the help of a non-specialized doctor.

I chose the fireman because in the case of zombies, you need a badass civil servant type to take control. On the planet, I'd take over that role.

And I'd like to think I could survive a year like this. But I'd go fucking crazy in such a place without music. Hence the musician.
