APSE contest--goodbye game story category, hello beat writing category

    Beat writing IS a great category. Should be fiercely competitive, at least among those who still care about these things. But again, I don't see why the game story category had to be jettisoned for this.

    The common complain I heard is that this (once again) favors the big papers over the numerous smaller papers that are APSE members. I'd say the solution is to make beat writing a category for the top one or two circulation groups and leave the game story for the smaller circ groups.

    If you are a true beat writer at a smaller paper, say a college town, then feel free to play up against the big guys.
