Sir I tip my cap to you.
I don't know what it is. I am not a thin man by any streatch of the word and I love pancakes but getting through two is a chore for me. Of course I'm also short and I think the pancakes take up about the same amount of space as I do.

Sweat cream and pancakes. Nothing better after a night of debauchery.

It's called "New York Times" style and not just the NYT uses it. And if it didn't make sense...it wouldn't have a book publish to explain everything in detail.

NYT style loses me, and disqualifies itself from further discussion, thusly:

    Nascar.

    Man, I hate that.

". . . its style manual . . . decrees that no acronym . . . longer than four letters can be rendered in capital letters."

Also pretty sure that crepes don't constitute class warfare. Crepes are street food, and not for dieters, especially when smeared with Nutella.

Weirder yet the rule deals separately with acronyms that can be pronounced as words. Ie, 'Unesco,' vs 'NAACP.'

And they still use 'Mr.' on second reference! It's like a time machine!

I write out National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing on first reference. Actually on all references. You guys are so trendy you probably just jump to "NCAA" on first reference, too.

At the risk of taking this thread back to the original topic...

As stated, a lot of publications use their own style for all kinds of things. In fact, there are many many many more jobs out there writing and editing for non-newspapers than newspapers, so you'd better get used to it.

Second, I happen to prefer sports writer because I believe the word writer is a lot more important than the word sports. I am a writer. Period. I can write about anything. I happen to specialize in sports but that can change. I don't want anyone to think that I am just a sportswriter who can also do sportswriting.

Again, back to my first point, many of us are going to have to find something else to do eventually.

Now you can go back to pancakes.
