FWIW, for the Library of Congress, it's one word, or at least it is in their subject headings.

AP style can make it two words; there's a good argument for that, albeit a tight-ass argument. But common usage makes it one word; check the book titles on Amazon.

So, might this have actually been a useful thread by myself?

Well, as long as the tight-ass argument is a good argument, I'm sure I'll stick with that one.

    Not really.

Until it's "newswriter" and "entertainmentwriter," it's "sports writer."

It's one word in the dictionary:

AP just gets crushed on this board. And rightfully so.
God forbid someone think differently than an antiquated service dilatory to change.

Maybe I'm mistaken about the playing field here. Are we talking about the style for outside use, or the style in newspapers?

Because if we're talking about the style in newspapers, the dictionary doesn't matter, nor does Frank Deford, nor does Amazon. AP style matters.

No, I'm talking about things such as resumes, etc. And just in general.

    Oh.

Well, then you can spell it SportzWriterz as far as I'm concerned.

I hate pancakes. That statement is relevant as anything doodah writes here.

And to be fair, not all newspapers use AP Style. The New York Times employs a bizarro style that doesn't really make sense at all.
