    Is a farewell column really necessary from a beat writer who's been there 8 years?
    We have become far too self-serving

    It's far from necessary, S-P.

    But it didn't do any harm, Pat didn't go on an ego trip, it lets those readers who do pay attention to bylines what's going on and eliminated a lot of head-scratching and questions about where Pat might be going ... in summary, no harm done.

    If you don't write a farewell column these days, readers who notice the missing byline will simply assume you were bought out or laid off.

    Most of the time, they will be right.
