The story about Riley renting a ballroom was for a "walk through" practice the night before a road playoff game, it wasn't for a normal regular season practice. "Getting a workout" is not part of the agenda for day before playoff game practice sessions.

I can assure you the last coach to skimp on practice obligations would've been Riley, he was always known for running some of the most brutal practices in the NBA, which is why his players grew sick and tired of playing for him his later years in Miami.

And wasn't "we talkin' bout practice" his response to Larry Brown bitching that he wasn't at practice before a playoff game?

He's not the one who brought it up. He was asked about it after he was disciplined by Larry Brown, IIRC.

At his rate, he spent more than a day than I take home in a year.

Riley would have his hard practices, but sometimes he would surprise his players by having them do fun stuff. He'd have each of them take a half-court shot. If one made it, practice was canceled.

Also with the Knicks one year, he jetted them all out to Vegas for a night prior to a day off from training camp to have them relax.

And got blown-ass off the court, a fact the AI-slurpers always neglect to remember.

A similar argument is made for certain college basketball coaches: "he's brilliant because he's made xxx Final Fours," forgetting to mention he's been bulldozed off the court in almost all of them.

And when you get to the point where the superstar's "mood" to push themselves sets the agenda, that's where you have situations where you don't exactly turn out to be the 1969-70 Knicks.

He never won the big one. And a lot of people are always going to have the question whether he would have won the big one had he been more of a team guy.

He also scored 48 points to carry the Sixers to a Game 1 victory. And he scored 35 or more in three of the of other four games. If he had even one teammate worth a damn, that series would have been closer.

No shame in getting beaten in the Finals by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.
