Academy Awards Reaction Thread

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Fenian_Bastard, Feb 25, 2008.

  1. I've looked and haven't seen one of these.
Quick now, which movie won more Oscars than any other movie except No Country?
It was nice that they let the woman from"Once" come back and talk, and very strange to listen to a Czech woman pronounce English with a brogue. It was like the old days when all the Spanish tennis players learned English from the Aussies. It was also nice that that song won because the songs from Enchanted really blew dino-goats.
Tilda Swinton beating out Cate-as-Bob was the Rank Injustice Of The Night.
When did Diablo Cody STOP being an "exotic dancer"?
Continue as you all roll home from the after-parties.

I was stunned Tilda Swinton won, but she was great in Michael Clayton... I was actually very pleasantly surprised that they didn't give it to Ruby Dee, who is a great actress, but was barely on the screen in American Gangster... I'm guessing Blanchett was penalized since she had already won. For some reason, I think she's won twice, but I'm not positive. I know she won for Aviator. I want to say she won for one of those Elizabeth movies, but I might be thinking of someone else.

    I dunno....

Blanchett still sounded like a woman.. felt like a woman.... in I'm Not There

The Oscars love rewarding people in gender-bending roles... I thought Hillary Swank looked like a chick in Boys Don't Cry...

It was one of the weakest categories and I was glad to see someone get honored for the greatness that is Michael Clayton...

I may be too mainstream in my tastes -- OK, I know I'm too mainstream.

But the Oscars are fast losing their relevance for me. The four main acting winners ... I'm so far from watching any of those movies, it's scary.

If you aren't going to see No Country For Old Men, I can't help you.

Then you can't help me. And I can live with that.

This just in, from the Mike and Mike Show: "Juno" was the only nominated movie to make the top 20 gross earnings list for the year. It came in at No. 18.

(It also was the only one I saw.)

I'm still stunned that Juno cleared $100 million... I'm surprised Michael Clayton didn't do better with an A-list star in the title role.

    I'm no art-house, wine sipper.

I need plot, or performance, or special effects, or arresting cinematography (ideally more than one) and I also need logic (with rare exception, such as with Moulin Rouge)....

I demand an entertaining night at the movies as much as most.

Go see NCFOM and tell me what you think.

I would be surprised if you aren't entertained.

Remember... in that chart you can see that NCFOM played at less than half the number of screens that most in the Top 20 did.

  12. That list is brimming with Fail. Alvin and the fucking Chipmunks?
    Jesus wept.
Can't agree with Simon on Cate-as-Bob. I really can't. She absolutely nailed the post-Newport, pre-cycle-crash Highway 61 Bob, especially in the press conference scenes.
Of course, my two 2007 faves, Breach and In The Country Of Elah, got stiffed, so what do I know?
The answer to my question, by the way, is The Bourne Ultimatum with three wins. How Paul Greengrass remains Oscar-less is mindblowing.
