On this date in 1974, Richard M. Nixon announced he was stepping down as president of the United States - the first man ever to do so. He announced his departure in the face of an imminent impeachment trial - and possible removal from office - over Watergate.

 

We will probably have another one soon enough.

 

And 15 years ago Jerry Garcia died.

Did you know that on November 13, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence and the request came from his wife?

 

Obviously many of those posting here weren't born or fail to see the significance of both the date and the event.

 

Or they are well aware of said event and find more edification in taking the mickey out of you.

One of the most significant events in American political history and this thread is being mocked because of who started it.

Well, it would help if the thread-starter actually got his facts right.

Nixon announced to the nation on the night of Aug. 8 that he was resigning. It didn't take effect officially until the next day, however, and Ford was sworn in just after noon on Aug. 9.
