    That's EXACTLY where I am on it. I can't quote chapter and verse on it. I just know, and I mean know, that it's wrong.

    It's not an either/or, and it's not whatever your editor suggests. It's black-and-white; one way is wrong, and the other is right. :)

    Yeah, I tried my best to explain to a colleague why "He completed 10 of 12 passes" is right, that "He completed 10-of-12 passes" is not, that "He was 10-of-12" and "He was 10-for-12" are correct and that "He was 0 for 4" is not, and I lost him at hello.

    And it didn't really matter in this case, because the seven guys on the desk all had their own styles anyway. It would show up in the paper based on whose page your story ran on.

    I think 10-for-12 is correct. I think 10-of-12 is incorrect.

    I could be convinced of that, but I won't be convinced that "He was 10 of 12" is correct.

    We use "Smith completed 10-of-12 passes."
