What was he going to do if the pitcher showed him up, award a home run?

I've seen a few times when a pitcher glares at the ump or waves his arms. The next few pitches are balls even if they are right down the middle.

All your protesting confirms is umpires need replaced by robots because they’re vindictive assholes far too often.

They're supposed to akin to judges in demeanor.

The standard of umpiring in college baseball has greatly increased over the past few years (10-20). It was never right, but in the "good ol days," umpires would sometimes make intentional mistakes as punishment to players who showed them up. The umpires could get away with it because no one was watching and that's how it was done (even in the major leagues, see Ken Kaiser).

However, just as in all aspects of life, there is video everywhere and the days of doing that are gone. That umpire from Friday's New Orleans game has probably ended his career at the Division I level. And deservedly so.

Everyone who's ever played knows and accepts that if you show up an umpire you shouldn't expect calls. The problem here is proportionality. If it was waist high and four or five inches off the plate, that's one thing. Here it was not remotely hittable and it ended the game; officials just can't do that.

The single worst strike call in the history of baseball, any level, anywhere, all at once.

And that is utter stupidity. An umps job is to call the game properly, not ignore the rules because his feelings are hurt.

One of my games in high school, our coach (a noted catching guru) noticed their catcher rose up to throw when we tried to steal. The ump was crouched, looking over the catcher's shoulder.
We couldn't touch their pitcher and our guy was on, too. It was 0-0 in the sixth. We got a leadoff HBP. Coach ordered the runner to fake steal on every pitch. The catcher rose up to throw, thus blocking the umpire's view. If you don't see it, it's a ball. It's in "the book."
Pitcher was throwing 90 mph heat right down the middle and they were called balls because the catcher was blocking the ump. He walked two more and was so flustered that he walked the next guy, too, despite us not fake stealing anymore. Walked in a run and we won, 1-0.
After the game, the other coach calmly walked over to our coach and asked him if he could take a couple of minutes to explain to his catcher what he was doing wrong that caused all of those pitches to be balls. It's in "the book."

Your book is outdated and ridiculous. Umps are there to officiate not become a part Of it. Nobody is there to see them and their fragile egos.

Every time you guys perceive that somebody made a mistake, you all want them fired and reprimanded. Chill out, brothers.
