That’s the kind of place that should take a crack at Archie Miller, although he might be able to hold out for an A-10/Mo. Valley job with actual resources.

At least Miller provides proof of concept within their own conference, sort of like Anthony Grant at Dayton.

For whatever reason - New Mexico takes their hoops seriously and is seen as a pretty good place to coach (by coaches) a lot of "names" have spent time there either on the way up or down.

So odd. It's one thing to hire a coach on the basis of his achievements. It's another thing to hire a rookie head coach because you presume the family name will matter. This achieves neither. The Lobos are saying they hope the family name will make the failure go away.

Pat should wait it out. His next gig needs to be at the high-major level. And Mason does not qualify.

... ," far too many N.C. State fans still say. Part of the evolution toward becoming a ghost chaser.

Way way back in the '80s, Mark Whicker and I were in a bar discussing college basketball in LA and Boston during an NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics. I noted that (back then) Boston college basketball was still going pretty OK because 1. Students at all the schools hated each other in sports, and 2. There were stud coaches like Mike Jarvis, Gary Williams and Jim Calhoun who were good at drawing attention to themselves. Mark said "here people say, "you're selling basketball? We got basketball. We got the Lakers. You going to be more entertaining than them?"
Now, all Boston college basketball is in the sewer and the Celts, while they've been OK, haven't won a title in over a decade. Two things sell sports. 1. Winning (also 2-3-4, etc.). But what sells next is people other people find engrossing. Indiana and UCLA have had neither for the longest time.

Richard Pitino appears to have quite a few more redeeming personal characteristics than Dad, and to understand just how many breaks he's gotten, so people may be going a bit easier on him. But man, he's pushed white/famous dad privilege to remarkable heights. He got a Big 10 coaching job at 30 with one year of head coaching experience, really did nothing there to distinguish himself, and already has another D1 head coaching job within a day.
