The 2014 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs begin this week, with a slightly different format (which some of us hate). All series remain best of 7.

    First round matchups are:

    EASTERN CONFERENCE

Boston Bruins vs. Detroit Red Wings

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens

New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers

    WESTERN CONFERENCE

    Anaheim Ducks vs. Dallas Stars

    Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild

St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks

San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings

Some crazy first round matchups. LA-SJ and StL-CHI would be conference finals in many years.

I picked Chicago, seeing how they could have an easy second round matchup, compared to others, and the West is better top to bottom.

Example 1,575 why hockey players are the toughest athletes. Ryan Getzlaf after taking a shot in the face

Not sure why...but I picked Ducks over Bruins. I hovered on taking the Avs, but changed my mind.

Hmmm, Getzlaf would probably be down for the count if he took a baseball off the head.

    I'd go for a Hawks/Bruins Final

I picked the Rangers, just because they're my daughter-in-law's favorite team. And given the parity that exists among the top 8-10 teams in the NHL (and I would include the Rangers in that group), as long as Lundquist plays up to form, they've probably got as good a chance as anyone.
