Hanley Ramirez returned from the DL about that same time, and he's been better than Puig.

Not to mention Kershaw and Greinke.

I went to look at the team, and them, from the 2 weeks after June 4 when they appeared to see if one kickstarted the team over the other. Neither did because that's when the Dodgers were still toiling.

From June 4 till the doubleheader split in the Bronx, Ramirez had 3 hits, 0 HRs and 2 RBIs. Puig had 18 hits, 4 HRs and 10 RBIs -- and Puig had 6 hits against the Yankees on June 19.

I still think Puig's presence changed the team leading up to the 42-8 run.

But your point about Ramirez is valid. 81 games, 320 PA, 62 runs, 102 hits, 25 doubles, 20 HR, 57 RBIs, .351 average.

And neither was as vital to Dodgers as McCutchen has been to the Pirates.

Untrue. Both Dodgers have been, and are, *as* vital.

Cutch has carried the Bucs in August in September -- no one will question that -- but I'd say Grilli was equally, if not more, vital to the team even having its chance in August and September.

A closer, one who the team replaced with relative ease when he went on the DL, was as vital as an every-day player? You have no idea what you are talking about.

If I had to vote for second place, I'd go Goldschmidt.

Puig has been a fairly average player for the last three months. His BA (.443) and OPS (1.218) hit high-water marks July 2 and have steadily dropped to their current spot of .331 and .950. Also he has done some really boneheaded stuff. And even in Puig's torrid start, Ramirez was hotter.

    Typical OOP douchebaggery.

    YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!111!111!

If Grilli blows even 5 of those 31 saves -- shit, if he blows 3 of those saves -- the Pirates are done right now.

As for your vaunted "everyday player", are we talking about the one who was hitting .247 with 3 homers and 14 RBIs after the first month -- and that average was .217 until a 4-hit game on the last day of the month.

That's when Cutch began to come alive. Raised his average 38 points in May and then the rest is as we've seen.

But again, Grilli saved 10 games in April and 31 until his injury. He was more vital to Pittsburgh's success than McCutchen.

He had 2 saves last year. Was he the closer? No. Whole different ballgame when the final 3 outs on your shoulders. What he did by saving game after game was every bit as important as McCutchen doing what he did.

Grilli being as important as McCutchen is easily one of the most absurd things ever posted on this board.
