I don't follow college baseball much, but SC does great recruiting. So good that many of their signees guys are first round picks and don't bother with going to college. They need to "recruit smarter, not harder".

Doesn't surprise me at all. Since there's no pro sports in the state, people really get behind the colleges more than most places. And college baseball is HUGE here. Mississippi State and Ole Miss can both easily draw 8,000 people for each game of an SEC series if they're doing well. Both teams averaged well over 7,000 per game this season and were in the top 5 in the country in attendance. Even Southern Miss regularly draws 3,000 to 4,000 per game and was 15th in attendance.
Mississippi might be one of the few places where college baseball is a bigger deal than college basketball most of the time.
Given all that, making it to the CWS finals is the closest thing Mississippi sports fans have to seeing one of their teams in the Super Bowl. It'll take a miracle season for the football teams to break through. Basketball is enough of a crapshoot that it could happen in the right year. But dammit, we OWN college baseball. This is a run people here have truly enjoyed, and it's been treated just as if one of the bigger sports had gotten to the promised land.

Quality over quantity: UCLA had better fan support, too.
