Virginia Tech really disappointed me, and Alabama showed me a little running game (albeit late in the game after they wore down the Lions) and improvement at quarterback. Auburn peeks back in. South Carolina jumped three spots into the Top 10. Arkansa picked up a spot and Florida was the beneficiary of a couple of poor performances (hello, Ohio State!) ahead of it. Mississippi State and Missouri hang in there and Penn State drops out, joining Georgia.

    Week 2

    1. Oklahoma (1)
    2. LSU (2)
    3. Alabama (3)
    4. Stanford (4)
    5. Florida State (5)
    6. Boise State (6)
    7. Oklahoma State (7)
    8. Texas A&M (8 )
    9. Wisconsin (9)
    10. South Carolina (13)
    11. Oregon (11)
    12. Nebraska (12)
    13. Virginia Tech (10)
    14. Arkansas (15)
    15. Florida (18)
    16. Michigan State (21)
    17. Ohio State (14)
    18. TCU (22)
    19. South Florida (24)
    20. Texas (20)
    21. Auburn (NR)

    Sooners-FSU: My old school viewing

    By I SHOULD COCO
    Cableless couch potato

Most of us remember TVs such as this beauty, a 1974 Zenith console. On Saturday afternoons in the 1970s and 80s, we spent plenty of quality time sitting on the sleeper sofa, lying on the living room’s shag carpeting or down in the wood paneling-walled basement catching some college football action on this behemoth.

No matter where you watched it, one thing was constant about televised college football in the 1970s: The Oklahoma Sooners.

Only the best teams appeared on national TV back then, and most years, the cameras followed the Sooner Schooner.

With a wishbone offense, a roster filled with fleet-footed I-backs and burly fullbacks, and huge defenders roaming the astroturf, the Sooners dominated just about every fall during the 70s and dared teams from the SEC, state of Florida or elsewhere to beat them on New Year’s Day.

For the nine seasons from 1971-79, Oklahoma won 11 games six times, and 10 games two times (they only played 11 regular season games back then, plus — possibly — a bowl game). The Sooners were often the top-ranked team in the Associated Press football poll. And they finished off this era of dominance with a 24-7 thumping of an up-and-coming independent team, Florida State, in the Jan. 1, 1980 Orange Bowl.

Which brings us, of course, to this weekend.

These days there’s plenty of college football games to watch, on plenty of different networks. But one game will have the spotlight on Saturday.

Oklahoma is back on top of the college football world — ranked No. 1 for the 100th week overall (a record) by the Associated Press. Off the field, the Sooners are seemingly kingmakers in the scramble among the super conferences, with the ability to make either a new Pac-16 or a revitalized Big 12. OU fans know what it’s like to be king, and they would love to be coronated after a dominating BCS title game victory in January.

Before they get there, though, here comes a fly in the ointment — those pesky upstarts from Tallahassee, once again.

Florida State has been waiting for this one ever since Landry Jones and the Sooners rolled up 34 first-half points and routed the Seminoles last September in Norman. The Seminoles are young, led by junior QB EJ Manuel, who has tossed for nearly 600 yards and 6 TDs in two season-opening routs.

A win Saturday night, before a national ABC audience, puts Florida State — and the ACC — back on the national football map. It knocks the BCS title game chase wide open, with other challengers such as Texas A&M and Oklahoma State waiting to jump ahead of the Sooners.

And, more than anything, it takes fans back to the days when a nationally televised game was always a can’t-miss sporting event.

    Just ask this guy ...

    TRIVIA TIME

We had a few people guess the answer to last week’s question, which asked where Michigan and Notre Dame have met in football other than Ann Arbor or South Bend.

The answer: Toledo, Ohio, on Oct. 18, 1902. The Wolverines won 23-0 to improve to 7-0 against the Irish. No lights or last-second defensive meltdowns needed in that one.

Here’s this week’s question: In honor of our good friend Mark Richt (who is NOT the answer, Georgia fans), which coach had the worst coaching tenure (record during his stint at one school) over the past 50 years? Hint: “Smoke on the Water”

Also topping the charts: this week’s poll, as selected by SportsJournalists.com voters:

Oooh ... just missed me. I think I was posting the poll/story as you PM'd me. Your vote pretty much followed the overall voting, though, so it wouldn't have changed much. We'll catch you next week.
