Um, no. Not even in the same zip code. The 2006 Mavs weren't the best regular season team in the history of the NBA.

I don't even think they were favored to beat the Yankees in the ALCS. The Yankees had by far the more proven talent. Ichiro was the only great player on that Mariners team; the others (like Brett Boone) just happened to have career years all at once. Their pitching wasn't nearly as battle-tested as the Yankees' was with Pettitte, Mussina, Clemens, El Duque and Rivera. And their offense was not nearly as versatile as that of the Yankees'.

Better comparison in baseball is the 1906 Cubs or the 1954 Indians.

Plus the Patriots got out of the first round.

The basketball comparison I think of is the 1991 UNLV team. They destroyed everyone - I think their average margin of victory was over 30 - and were sort of the villains of the college hoops world. Then lost in stunning fashion to Duke in the semis.

    As did the Mariners.

I think there are some real parallels there, including the cheating aspect.

The Mariners didn't even make it to the World Series. At least the Patsies "played" in the Super Bowl.

The Pats were at least in this Super Bowl. Oakland never really had a chance after Gibson's dinger.
