140th Kentucky Derby thread

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by RedHotChiliPrepper, Apr 29, 2014.

  1. The draw didn't change my thinking much. Still think California Chrome and Wicked Strong are the two best horses. But with the post draws, I'd play my trifecta as Chrome, Hoppertunity, Wicked Strong ... Experts seem to be writing off Samraat, but I think he could be a factor. Lots of past races to watch yet, though.

California Chrome has had nothing but perfect trips when he wins. Maybe he'll get another in the Derby, but it's doubtful. I'm not willing to take a short price to see if he can successfully battle adversity.

Still, read it on the wire, mea culpa and all, and wanted to get sick.

Unless I stop at the dog track on my way home from golf tomorrow, I won't have any Derby bets for the first time since the early '70s . . . sacrilegious.

No way I'd bet California Chrome at 5-to-2.

I think Danza offers the best price of any horse with what I believe is a realistic chance to win, but I don't like his post position next to California Chrome and I'm becoming increasingly convinced the winner will be one of the horses not thought (by me) to have a realistic chance.

With Hoppertunity out, I think Chitu will get a spot in my exotics.

Really nice performance from Untapable in the Oaks.

In an Olympic year, I'll pick Medal Count.

Seems the betting favorite rarely wins the Derby, especially when there's such a large field.
