You got it wrong. It's Carmine Hose in old-time newspaper language, not Crimson.

For what it's worth, "Dubs" is against ESPN's style guide. Someone went rogue.

How many of those became commonplace because they became a crutch for lazy headline writers?

Hawk Harrelson, when broadcasting the "Pale Hose," occasionally called the Red Sox "the Carmines." Compared to most of his other utterances and rants, it was only mildly annoying.

Though, this does make for an interesting thread jacks. Is the Dubs also a subtle nod to the Oakland Athletics being called the As almost universally?

There are some interesting stories on team names. I remember hearing as a kid that the Phillies actually changed their name to the Blue Jays or two years, but most sportswriters kept using Phillies so the blue jays named was dropped.

Generally, I agree ... except when dealing with the dreaded one-column, 42-point head spec.

"The Crimson Hose" is a great nickname for a Native American male porn star.

It's so funny you point out how funny Dubs sounds. The term is so ubiquitous in the Bay Area that it's easy to forget not everyone is accustomed to the term.

It makes sense that it shouldn't be used nationally in official copy. The sports radio station I listen to (I'll pause for gnashing of teeth) lost the rights to broadcast Warriors games a couple of years ago but still does pre and post game stuff. Only because they aren't the official station they can't label their coverage "Warriors countdown to tipoff" and the like. It's all Dubs during official branding to avoid trouble.

I agree. Most rules go out the window for headlines to get things to fit the space

It sucks to see "Fins" in NFL heds. Pisses off the "Dolfans."

Both were common usages in newspapers and radio up until about 1960. Red Sox also sometimes (horribly) called The Olde Towne Team. It's where Gary's Old Town Tavern in Cheers got its name.
