That's kind of how Dianne Feinstein became mayor of San Francisco, IIRC.

I read an article related to the killings in San Francisco one time. The main focus of the article was some guy who went on to become a hotshot editor, but at the time was running a suburban paper. When the news broke, someone asked the guy if they should send a reporter. Instead, he sent the whole newsroom. When challenged on his decision to cover something technically outside the circulation area, he responded that this was the big news everyone would be talking about for days to come, and that meant they should be covering it full force.

Methinks those days are over.
