Researchers in Europe have found that city birds perform a kind of avian rap while those in the countryside produce a gentler and more relaxed birdsong.
Tim Guilford, professor of animal behavior at Oxford University, said animals show astonishing variety in the ways that they communicate and that this behavioral flexibility may be one reason why great tits are surviving in the face of rapid urbanization when so many other species are failing.
"Great tits learn songs from each other and it seems that selective learning of the most suitable city songs - or perhaps the rejection of the least effective ones - may be behind the consistent differences between city habitats and the neighboring forests," Guilford said.
