The Natchez Democrat, a 10,000-circulation daily surrounded by nine high schools and one university, is currently recruiting its next sports reporter. Ideal recruits will have sports experience at a college newspaper, a weekly or daily, Quark or InDesign experience and an eye for the story behind the game. Although much of our coverage is of preps and Alcorn State University, we branch out to LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and the New Orleans Saints when pertinent. Job duties include writing, page design and heading up our weekly outdoors page. Requirements include a desire to learn and grow while making a difference with your work while you hone your knowledge and skills. Our location on the Mississippi River makes us a mecca for hunting, fishing and even a little kayaking. For more information contact Managing Editor Julie Finley at [email protected] or 601-445-3551.

My $.02: Finley is pretty damn sharp and would be an excellent employer.

I don't know about Julie -- she was still at the DM during my time in N'town -- but Kevin Cooper, Todd Carpeneter and the rest of the staff there are damn fine folks to work for.

That is if Julie doesn't lie to you. I know someone she did lie to who applied for this position before. She told this person they were wanting more management experience for the sports editor position (it's only that person and a reporter) and said the prior two had experience when they didn't.

Was that person, by chance, you?

Not surprising. Natchez is a good place for someone to cut teeth and move on.

Lots of people have done that. They've gone through several SEs in the last couple years and, last I heard, had been without a full sports staff for a while.

OK... I"m close to this situation. I'm the guy that left. If anyone would like to know the real info about this job, PM me. I'll be glad to you why you shouldn't take this job.
