Description:
Capital Newspapers Portage Division seeks a full-time regional sports reporter to join the Wisconsin coverage team for its publications and websites located in Sauk County. The position will be based in Baraboo, Wis., about 40 miles north of Madison. Candidates who choose to live in Baraboo or the immediate area (15 to 20 miles) will receive preferential consideration.
Our newspapers focus on local high school and college sports and local recreational sports (youth and adult). Our location produces three hyper-local newspapers: the six-day Baraboo News Republic, the twice-weekly Reedsburg Times-Press, and the weekly Sauk Prairie Eagle. Each publication also provides robust online coverage through wiscnews.com, wisconsinprepzone.com and social media. We also provide regular backup coverage and statistical support for sister newspapers in the region, including the Wisconsin State Journal and others.
The successful candidate will provide coverage for multiple newspapers within the division as a matter of course. The focus will be on teamwork, collaboration, organization and pitching in across multiple publications. We value a candidate who can be depended upon to satisfactorily and creatively complete assigned tasks with a minimum of hand-holding.
Reporting, writing and photography will be focal points of the position. The successful candidate should be well-versed with camera and computer use. Line editing and page proofing will be a secondary but regular part of weekly duties. The successful candidate should have a firm understanding of journalistic ethics, AP style, accuracy, sports rules and concepts, statistics-keeping, interviewing skills and relationship-building with sources.
