SJ Nerd Squad Question — Cable Internet

Or, simply spending $70 on a wireless router. It would be cheaper than getting a second modem; unless they're both rentals.

We've already home Wi-Fi.

But the wireless router is right next to our desktop with the cable modem and an external hard drive. I'm thinking of getting a second modem and moving the Wi-Fi router out to the den to free up space on the desk.

Then to answer your original question: Yes, it's that simple.

You'll have the same IP address though. You may want to contact the cable company, just in case.

I don't think cable service will allow 2 modems to connect to it.
It ashigns an IP and I don't believe that that's capable of ashigning 2 different ones to a house.
You just need to get a router, hook it to one where the modem is, then run an Ethernet cable to the other machine.

Just remember: This is not the Internet ...

I just ended an online chat session with a Cox cable Internet specialist. He said that wouldn't be a problem.

I guess I should have done that first. But then again, SJ is the home to all of the world's answers.

Why not:
-- Get a wireless card on the desktop.
-- Connect wirelessly to the network?

It goes a lot faster if it's hard wired.
Inky, no offense, but you better do some more checking. The more I Googled it, the more I don't think it can eb done that way, unless Cox does something completely different that allows it.

Well, yeah, but why buy/rent a second modem when you already have the infrastructure there? I'm kind of confused on this one.
