Post-Dispatch SE (big surprise, right?)

Some say it's the summer that's great for job hunting, but it sure seems like a lot of new gigs pop up around Christmas.
Anything new here?

I figure most jobs right now aren't doing any interviews the last couple of weeks of the year. that way it ensures no more problems on this year's budget.

That doesn't matter at the P-D. I'm pretty sure Lee's fiscal year ends in October or September.

Doc is correct. I'm at a Lee shop and October sounds correct for a start / finish. It's sometime in late fall.

No company's fiscal year matches the calendar year.

Some do. Lee's turns over Oct. 1. Which is why the P-D finalized all those buyouts on Sept. 28, for instance.
But given the nature of things in publicly-traded newsrooms, they might want to keep a big salary off the books until the end of the quarter, which in this case would be Jan. 1. Or it may make no difference at all.

Guys the reason they're waiting until January has nothing to do with the calendar year, or fiscal year. It has to do with holidays and vacations getting in the way of setting up interviews. You can't set up an interview if the people who need to interview the candidate are out of town for Christmas.

We have a winner.

We have a little departmental reshuffling that will wait until after the holidays. It's hard enough putting out a section this time of year.

This was sent to the P-D's staff today:

After four years leading our sports copy desk, Dave Luecking is moving a few feet across the newsroom to join the news copy desk, effective immediately.

For the time being, assistant sports editor Don Reed will handle scheduling and other administrative duties involving the sports copy desk and the slotting duties will rotate among Don and some of the very able copy editors on that team. We'll begin the process of selecting a new desk chief once we have a new sports editor in place.

So it looks like they will be filling a copy chief job in the upcoming future. Start polishing off your resume.
