Panic on the streets of London

britwrit said:
I'm not saying the reports are exagerated but London is such a huge area. Deskslave is right. It mostly seems confined to the poorer, working-class neighborhoods. The only thing I've seen out of the ordinary is a couple of armed cops on the tube ride in from Heathrow this morning.

In the end, it's the working class people in these areas who are going to take it on the chin (the vast majority who actually do work and have lived there for generations.) This Tory government isn't going to spend the cash to rebuild these neighborhoods. What's more, there's been a move afoot to ship lots of folks in subsidized housing way, way out of town to cheaper digs. These riots will do nothing more than help turn London more into Manhattan than it already is.

Just send the people living in public housing to Altoona just like Newark did.

News on The Jam's Facebook page that their classic "Going Underground" is back on the charts......

Some people might say my life is in a rut,
But I'm quite happy living with what I got
People might say that I should strive for more,
But I'm so happy I can't see the point.
Somethings happening here today
A show of strength with your boy's brigade and,
I'm so happy and you're so kind
You want more money - of course I don't mind
To buy nuclear textbooks for atomic crimes

And the public gets what the public wants
But I want nothing this society's got -
I'm going underground, (going underground)
Well the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground, (going underground)
Well let the boys all sing and the boys all shout for tomorrow

Some people might get some pleasure out of hate
Me, I've enough already on my plate
People might need some tension to relax
[Me?] I'm too busy dodging between the flak

What you see is what you get
You've made your bed, you better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies put you down and their promises bust
You'll see kidney machine replaced by rockets and guns

And the public wants what the public gets
But I don't get what this society wants
I'm going underground, (going underground)
Well the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground, (going underground)
[So] let the boys all sing and let the boys all shout for tomorrow

We talk and we talk until my head explodes
I turn on the news and my body froze
Braying sheep on my TV screen
Make this boy shout, make this boy scream!

Going underground, I'm going underground!

I really have nothing to add, other than I love The Smiths. If the kids really want to riot, they'd listen to Dr. Dre and Snoop. Or this little nugget, which was also inspired by the LA riots. Lyrical geniuses they were not my friends, but I loved the song when I was 14.

Downset, Anger

Some of this is a bit harsh. I'm not even this much over the top. But some interesting points are raised:

Drudge is linking to that.

He may have a point, but it's buried under a mountain of Mark2010 like venom.

He raised a similar point to the mayor of Philadelphia. I know some of these disaffected youth haven't had it easy and in large part it's not their fault they were brought into the world with such morons for parents (or parent, as the case may be). But you can't tat and pierce yourself up, have a Mohawk or dreds, pants halfway down your ass, then bench that no one will hire you. I know life in the hood, whether it's Philly or London, isn't a joyride. But many people have overcome it -- at least enough to know it's possible.

I found this to be a great hoot, really.

And the sports angle: "How do you inculcate values in a child whose only role model is footballer Wayne Rooney — a man who is bereft of the most meagre human graces?"

Maybe I'm not seeing the right footage, but I wonder why the police don't just beat a bunch of motherforkers down when they have them on the ground. Just pound the shirt out of them — put them in the hospital or worse. I mean, this shirt is out of control. Pain and the fear of pain is the only thing that will work at this point. Beat the forking shirt out of every rioter you see, leave them there bleeding, and there will be fewer rioters. It ain't forking rocket science.

I wonder if the resignations of the top two officials at the Metropolitan Police in the wake of the Rupert Murdoch phone hacking scandal had any role in the police response to the riots.

I strongly doubt it. Massive planned cuts to police budgets probably haven't helped, though. And I would guess that staffing on a Saturday and Sunday night in early August is probably not at its highest levels.
