Poertner announced as new Roswell Daily Record editor
ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) The Roswell Daily Record's managing editor for the past six years takes over as editor Tuesday.
Andrew Poertner said it was a "great honor" to be chosen.
The current editor, Mike Bush, will become managing editor.
Publisher Cory Beck said the switch won't mean much change.
"These two have already worked together for years and formed a good collaboration," he said.
Poertner came to the Daily Record in January 1998 as a general ashignment reporter and added copy editing duties that summer. He became news editor in 2000 and was promoted to managing editor that August.
He said his earlier positions gave him perspective.
"I plan to use that knowledge to further improve the paper," he said.
Poertner, who received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Montana in 1994, has won numerous awards for writing and photography in New Mexico ashociated Press Managing Editors and West Texas Press ashociation contests.
Bush said the pressure involved as editor led him to step down.
"I am looking forward to different responsibilities, especially working more closely with reporters," he said.
Bush graduated from New Mexico State University in 1975 and joined the Record as a reporter in 1976. He moved up to city editor before leaving to attend a seminary, then returned in 1994, eventually becoming managing editor. He left again in 1998, then returned in 2001 as editor.
