I'd like to give a recommendation for relaxation music. I came across a band called Zero 7 -- they had a song in "Garden State" that I liked -- and started listening to some of the stuff off their two latest albums, and it's pretty good. Some solid vocals, mixed with some good synth work; it's almost like electronic jazz, if such a thing exists.

"Destiny" is a beautiful track. The moment I heard that song, I needed to hear more.

In that second tier, I'd also include the Zombies. ... Odessey and Oracle is an awesome album, and they split up before they really got rolling. Definitely in the same class as The Animals and Kinks.

Yes - good call on the Zombies - although their body of work is not a wide as the Animals. She's Not There is one of the rock all time greats.

Every song on that album seems like it was written in response to "Eleanor Rigby," but it's still a great album.

I'm going to get killed for this, but my favorite Kinks albums are all from the late 70s and early 80s.  Love "Village Green," love the early singles and all the Anglo stuff -- but nothing beats "Give the People What They Want" and "Low Budget" for me.

Just ahead of that era were my two favorites: "Sleepwalker" and "Misfits." My problem with "Give t he People What They Want" is that Ray gave the people what they want. When I saw him do it onstage, it was the final encore, and after he finished singing he kicked the mike stand in disgust and glared at the people. Or maybe I just wanted to read that in him.

That's the best summation of the Zombies I ever read. "Eleanor Rigby," indeed.
Your Kinks recommendation has a parallel with me in Van Morrison's late '70s, early 80s stuff. Everything from St. Dominic's Preview to Common One. There's a lot of great, really weird stuff there -- I particularly recommend "You Don't Pull No Punches, But You Can't Push The River" from Veedon Fleece.

Been listening to Joe Satriani's "Super Colossal" a lot lately.
Very good album musically and it flows really well. Pretty amazing how he can stir up emotion without saying a word.
A great listen.

I've been listening to the Magic Numbers' debut album a lot lately, a group Nick Hornby raved about in an article I read about a year ago.

Very good stuff, although the album loses its steam toward the end. A lot of power pop. This isn't an original observation, but they sound like a souped-up version of The Mammas and the Pappas.

Haven't heard it yet. But from all reports, it is supposed to be there best ever.

Also, I recently picked up Matisyahu. Give it a listen

Personally, I love the new chilli peppers album, it is defintely one of their best, if not the best. 28 songs, and not one of them seems like a throwaway song. I was a little leery of the double album, but it has lived up to its hype in my opinion. So far, favorite track is "wet sand"

I dig the song that's out on the radio now from the Chili Peppers.

As for Matisyahu ... King Without a Crown got so overplayed (even on XM) that I'm taking a break from him.

Good to hear. I plan on picking it up today or tomorrow.

After going about a year without buying any new CDs, there have been several new releases lately that I'm excited about. I've already bought the new Pearl Jam and Ben Harper albums and now I'm looking forward to the new Chili Peppers discs.
