One thing I could never get past in regard to Marvez was his pro wrestling column. Maybe I'm being prejudiced toward people who get into that shirt, but I think it really hurts his crediblity in a lot of readers' minds.

Alex's wrestling column predates his NFL coverage by many years. He began writing it for Miami before his freshman year in college.

And?

I referred to it in the past tense.

The idea of being a pro wrestling expert is juvenile. Giving a kid a column is silly. I've never gotten past that. I see his byline and wonder if he's still enraptured by men getting hit by folding chairs while the referee gets conveniently distracted by a manager with a megaphone. I doubt I'm alone.

People are enthralled by a lot of things we don't necessarily find interesting (See: 99 percent of reality TV). Miami probably wanted to make sure something with a Nascar-like blowup wasn't coming about. And it spent very little resources doing so.
By the way, holding a grudge against what someone did before and during college seems a heck of a lot lamer than writing a wrestling column.
heck, I might just send the Bushwhackers to your house to gnaw on your ear.

If I'm not mistaken, Marvez' wrestling column is syndicated... It probably makes him a nice chunk of change, which could be difficult to give up...

Your definition of a grudge and mine are a lot different. This isn't a grudge in the slightest. Grudge's are personal in my book. This is just a professional stigma. I would feel the same about Marvez if he had once written for a supermarket tabloid. Yes, people are enthralled by that stuff, too. Doesn't make the stuff legit.

Alex wasn't your normal high school kid answering phones. He was the best high school kid I ever saw, seemed a lot older. I'll put it this way. When he was a freshman or possibly a sophomore at University of Florida, I recommended him for a pro beat at a mid-major because the SE was having trouble finding experienced pro beat guys given the housing costs there. That's how good he was then. He interned at The New York Times. Everyone saw the ability.

Anyway, as I recall, his column began as 10 or 12 inches in the back of the Sunday section at a time (late 1980s or early 1990s) when pro wrestling had become the flavor of the month, sort of campy chic. Whether Alex took the wrestling seriously, I couldn't tell you. But the paper seemed to see it as entertainment. It was not at all unlike newspapers today running columns about the current fad, poker.

It's OK to run your mouth, we all do. The problem you're going to run into here, Bomber, is that you are going to encounter people who know more about the situation than you do.

Marvez is one of the nicest people in this business. He is also very good at what he does and he's done it for a long time...

You are right. He's marvelous.

I read his column every thursday when it comes across the AP wire here. Of course, my SE would shoot me if I ever ran the thing, but that's another story...

People in the south love their 'rasslin, and a column in the sports section isn't as rare as you might think. And I'd take an entertaining wrestling column over a fantasy football report any day of the week.
