We seem to do nothing in appropriate measure. When I was growing up, there were segments of kids that were not encouraged to go to college. The problem was they were stereotypical groups, be they not white or lower socioeconomic. Those kids were pigeonholed. That was categorically discriminatory.
But then we went the other way, where every kid should go to college. Look. I think if you want the opportunity to college you should be able to afford to do that. But when every kid is told they should go to college, the pendulum swings the other way with sometimes disastrous results. And that kind of happened. Kids went to college not necessarily because they wanted to or are interested but because they were told that's what they should do.
So now we're reacting the other way and totally devaluing college education. We need colleges. We need doctors and engineers and we need people to teach the knowledge that we have amassed as a society so that it does not vanish. But this current swing of the pendulum is jeopardizing the very educational foundation of this country. We need education. We need smart people. We need people who become educated.
