The Associated Press seeks a sports writer for its Charlotte, N.C. bureau.
The Charlotte sports writer covers the NFL's Carolina Panthers, the NBA's Bobcats, the WNBA's Sting and two major golf tournaments. This writer also assists with coverage of college sports in a state with consistent Top 25 teams and assists with coverage of major NASCAR events in the area.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to approach the assignment as a beat and show a track record of source development that will enable the AP to compete aggressively in the marketplace. In addition to crisp and insightful game coverage on deadline, this person must regularly generate enterprise that extends beyond player profiles and game previews. The successful candidate must participate in long-range planning and coordinate coverage with the sports desk in New York, the Raleigh news editor, the Charlotte correspondent, bureau supervisors as well as freelancers to ensure that all member needs are met, and be able to represent the AP at occasional member meetings and conferences.
Skills needed include demonstrated excellence as a reporter, writer and editor, with success covering spot news, developing compelling enterprise and breaking stories on his or her beat. The successful candidate must be able to recognize and develop newsworthy stories, work accurately under deadline pressure, be able to juggle multiple assignments and communicate effectively with editors, colleagues and sources. Candidates must be able to work effectively and take direction from editors on the sports desk in New York, the Raleigh news editor, the Charlotte correspondent and bureau supervisors.
Applicants must be able to coordinate with photos and coordinate coverage by freelance writers. In a news emergency, this person should be able to step in and assist in coverage of a non-sports story, lending either reporting or editing skills as needed. Applicants must have at least two years experience covering major-league or major college programs; general newswriting experience is a plus.
