the times once put out a kick-ass section for many years under this person's watch. i think that fact speaks volumes.

I know a lot of great papers where the SE is an absolute clown.

Even the most beloved SEs make enemies on their staff.

I have two close friends who work for the same paper with a very high profile and well-respected SE. One would take a bullet for the guy and the other would like to put a bullet in the guy.

I think it's like that at most places.

MG, all i was saying was the person was lead in putting out a quality section for many years.

Oh, I know... I wasn't taking a shot at Cathy...

i just didn't see the connect ... my bad.

and nononeyouknow, i think if a person is in the position as long as henkel was, she probably deserves a bit of the kudos as well.

Petty, I didn't say she didn't deserve credit. Just pointing out that the people, not the person, make a section great.

I would want folks to say the same about my section and people whenever I decide to hang it up. I know I deserve credit for the hires and guidance, but my staff deserves the kudos for all the great work and awards.

There are those who will say that she should've left a few years ago. Nevertheless, her contributions to the business and the Seattle area will be remembered. She will be missed.

An old editor used to say that using "those who will say" or "many say" or crap like that is a poorly disguised way of saying "I will say."
"So," he'd say, "have the rocks to say it."

Who are those, drip?
Moddy, as someone who worked in the Seattle market, I am not speaking from hearsay. Naming names and creating anarchy, which is what would happen because of some of the people that are on board on a daily basis, isn't great for the site and not necessary in my opinion. With that in mind, I won't mention anyone.
You have those who liked her. You have those who didn't like her. However, she did leave a mark in the community and for that matter nationally as the paper was highly regarded as a source of information. She will be missed.

In a note from Editor David Boardman on Friday....
We are pleased to announce that our new sports editor is Don Shelton. Since joining the department in 1987, Don has been a key leader in elevating our section from what most observers would say was the third best sports section in the region to what is now not only the best section in the Northwest, but one of the finest in the nation.

Don's vision for the newspaper and for Seattletimes.com is focused and inspirational. The challenges are enormous, but with Don at the helm and Deputy Sports Editor Bill Reader and Assistant Sports Editor Jon Fisch at his flanks, we have the leadership to meet them.

Please join us in congratulating Don. And thanks to the entire sports staff for their patience and commitment during this time of transition.

Congrats to you, Fisch, for that call-out from the big man. Make sure to have your troops' backs the way the boss seems to have yours.

Don Shelton is a good guy. Didn't give me a job when I applied there a few years back, but at least gave me the time of day, which was more than some others. I know he'll do as much as he can with the resources he's allowed.

Well at least we know he's a good judge of character.

Thanks for sharing that, Fisch. Glad they decided to fill Cathy's spot and, from what I hear, Don will do a great job.
