This is off topic from the actual convention schedule. But I read about a poker outing? Do we need to sign up for that? Any info would be awesome. Shuffle up and deal.

If it's like last year's APSE poker tournament, there will be a sign-up sheet at the registration desk.

And if it's really like last year's APSE poker tournament, I'll get bounced 30 minutes into it when my A-A is cracked by somebody who goes all-in with J-10 and catches runner-runner.

I think, along with the sports editors from Gannett, McClatchy, etc., there should be a meeting for all of the SEs on SportsJournalists.com.

Oh wait, we can just have that in the hospitality suite.

Doesn't matter to me since I haven't been in a while -- my boss is doing a panel there this year -- but I'm still disappointed that they haven't had a golf outing, it appears, in a while. Don't see one on this year's schedule.

I guess it's because Saturday is more a loaded-with-business day than it used to be.

Or, it could be that it's just too oppressive to play an afternoon round there in June.

Last time APSE was in St. Louis (1988, I believe), it was soooo hot and steamy while we were playing Quail Creek, one of my golf shoes melted apart! The top actually separated from the bottom. I was walking around with the shoe flapping! Kind of like clown shoes (quite fitting for my golf back then, too.) And Mark Whicker is my witness (on all counts, especially my golf game)!

To this day I kick myself for not saving that shoe, having it bronzed and turned into an APSE Golf trophy to award at the dinner on Saturday night.

Supposed to be in the 90s all weekend. Typical for STL this time of year.

The hotel is pretty nice. Stay there all the time.

Pete: I played that day, too. What a miserable experience; course was new, and hard, heat was oppressive, and I was a bit hung over as well.

We didn't finish, as I recall. In fact, I think we barely made nine.

And it was a long drive to boot.

On the original thought, though, this isn't the first year they haven't had golf, I don't think. I think it has been gone for a few.

So the Durham Herald-Sun sends its sports editor to APSE but doesn't send a writer to cover North Carolina in the College World Series.

darn! that's just awesome. I'm still laughing.

Well, a couple of things, the second of which is probably going to bring a ton of ship down upon me.

1) It's possible APSE is paying since he's a panel participant, and there's no budget hit against the paper.

2) I'd argue that for a sports editor in Durham to go to APSE might be of more value in the long run to the department and the paper than coverage of a team in the College World Series. A lot learned, and a lot of recharging of batteries goes on there.

Speaking if which, if it's true, the closing of the hospitality suite at 1 a.m. is just tragic (in a relative sense, of course) and really a disappointing sign.

Is "recharging the batteries" a euphemism for "destroying the liver?"
