Okay, so we all know there is no real need to say 'on' when referring to a day.

Example: I went to the store Saturday. Not: I went to the store on Saturday.

However, let's look at these two sentences:
1) The Podunk Penguins lost to the Bumville Badgers Saturday.
2) The Podunk Penguins lost to the Bumville Badgers on Saturday.

I prefer the first sentence, if only to save a word.

I have a friend who uses 'on' when two words beginning with an upper case letter come consecutively in the setence, just to break it up.

Thoughts?

What Wicked said. Use on when you have proper nouns together.

Unless you're the Chicago Tribune, which seems to ignore this point.

So does AP on occasion, but all those caps together are hard to read, and our job is to make it easier on readers.

Oh, I agree. It's just funny how often respected, talented writers ignore this rule.

i once wrote a gamer about a local team playing a school way out of the coverage zone when i was still a writer. at some point in the piece, i strung together these four words: Friday Harbor on Friday.

the forking SE, being the genius he was and still is, changed my words to: Friday Harbor Friday.

the day i became an SE, i have been inflexable about breaking up proper nouns.

My old old shop didn't use on at any point -- no breaking up of proper nouns.

Sadly, I learned the rule on SportsJournalists.com.
