Had great success as a drag racer long before oval tracks. And set speed records on the salt flats.
Two massive incidents...

A lot of race drivers are alive today because of Bill Simpson and his safety products. Particularly when it came to dying from fire. Nomex. Crash helmets. Safety belts. He pushed everyone in the industry to do better.
And NASCAR basically tried to ruin his company after the Earnhardt crash...
