Why I Quit My Dream Newspaper Job After 4 Months

Reads like she had as much interest in her old(er), male, white, stubborn, conservative employees as they did her...... with no apparent newspaper experience I'm not surprised she ran away after 4 months.

    $15-20K/year FT position

Was browsing jobs and saw this listing offering $15-20K/year for a full time position. Yes, it's a small, "growing," paper, but from what I can tell is just outside of Indianapolis. JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Reporter / Paginator I started in the business about 15 years ago and this...

"Getting out of the business" resource thread

Yup, CNHI. Could be longer, I forget when they started, but it was probably 5-7 years ago. We've gone from having a meeting each quarter announcing them and reinforcing that this was the "right thing to do to get in a better place" to an email alert. Meanwhile, job openings are still being...

"Getting out of the business" resource thread

Agreed, I do the same thing in the phone interview. If they don't ask about hours I make sure they know there are nights/weekends involved as well as pay and out "extra" days off (furlough). I would say that weeds out a third of the candidates, but those are things no amount of negotiating is...

    Overtime pay

My SO's position is salary but still pays overtime. I don't know exactly how it works exactly but it's something with exempt/non-exempt. I thought all salary positions were exempt, I guess that's not the case.

    Overtime pay

Wow, they haven't done that at my place yet, but we have been on furlough for probably 5 or 6 years now.

    Overtime pay

Where I work they're pretty conscious of overtime, so much so that if it appears to be a problem for a particular position they "promote" that person to salary. I'm in my last couple weeks so I'll miss how this plays out. Heard a couple guys on the desk talking about it, but no one of any...

"Getting out of the business" resource thread

This happened to me right out of college when I flew out for an interview. Same thing, ME wouldn't discuss salary before the trip, brushed it off and said we'd discuss it in person. I assumed (naively) that it was probably decent pay. The salary ended up being MUCH lower than I anticipated and...

    Overtime pay

Just saw this article and am interested to see how this will impact my shop: Obama to expand overtime coverage - Fortune I haven't read all the fine print, but it seems like this will impact about half a dozen people in my newsroom.
