    Design help?

My first suggestion is to check out some other sports pages at sites such as newspagedesigner.com or sportsdesigner.com and use those pages to develop some new things to try. Also, be thankful that you can try out new ideas. At my shop, everything has to be prototyped before we can make even the...

    worst leads you have seen

I can't remember the exact phrasing of the second part of this lede, but it actually made it as far as the copy desk before someone red-flagged it: Mary Smith's heart was a lonely hunter, searching for life after she was bludgeoned to death two years ago by her estranged husband. It was on a...

    Where's your "perfect place?"

Apparently, like several other people here, I need to look into opportunities in Wisconsin: Worcester, Massachusetts Milwaukee, Wisconsin Hartford, Connecticut Providence, Rhode Island New Haven, Connecticut Chicago, Illinois Carlisle, Pennsylvania Toledo, Ohio Eau Claire, Wisconsin...

How do you deal with incompetent editors?

Are other people in your bureau having the same issues with this editor?

    Layoffs at Ventura County Star

Didn't Belo just complete a similar split, breaking off the Dallas Morning News and its other daily papers into a separate company?

    Abq. Trib to close

It doesn't make this any easier, but the staff seemed to have a fairly good idea that this was coming. Back in December, we interviewed a reporter from there for an opening we had at the time, and he seemed to think the paper wouldn't make it to the end of 2007. Having survived the demise of...

    Scanning in pages.

This is the same problem I encountered when I was applying for my current position (and I lived in Pittsburgh at the time, so maybe it was the same store.) Kinkos told me that the only way they could scan the images was with with written permission from a senior company official. Luckily, my...

    Great views from the plane

I agree with the poster who mentioned Berlin (Tegel Airport.) Seeing the obvious architectural differences in what used to be East and West Berlin was fascinating. Zurich was nice, not so much directly over the city, but on the approach, you can see all of these quaint village communities which...

    Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, copy editor

True, but technically they were employed by the Greensburg Tribune-Review (at the time the two papers were almost completely separate) so they were never really on the radar of the managers in Pittsburgh, which was good for them because they got to do their own thing.

Popular country music band breaks up

I have, in fact, heard of Brad Renfro, because he was in Ghost World. I ran his obit in the paper in which I work.

    Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, copy editor

As far as sports people who've moved on to better things, one sports writer who used to work there now writes for the Dallas Morning News. I'm not sure whether any of the other sports people have moved on to something better. A few on the news side have ended up at some pretty decent papers...

After 12 years, 'Rent' will close June 1

I've seen this show several times, both on Broadway and on tour, and have loved every performance. The stage show is so much better than the movie, though I also enjoyed the film. It's sad that it's closing, but not surprising given the dwindling audience and the now-somewhat-dated message.

Popular country music band breaks up

I've been a country music fan in Pittsburgh for years and have still never heard of these guys.

Mother Baldwin Must Be So Proud

From the previews, it looks as though Celebrity Apprentice will have two Baldwins next week. Steven and Alec.

    Paginating in the dark

Not a power failure story, but a few years ago I was working for a paper that printed at an off-site facility. We lost our connection to the printing plant, and couldn't get any negatives to come out at our plant. No one had any clue what was going on, and there was mass panic in the newsroom...

    Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, copy editor

I used to work for this paper, and seriously, unless your other option is unemployment, stay away. The circulation numbers are questionable at best, and the publisher openly hates the Pirates management, which factors heavily into sports coverage decisions.
