I guess I am a retard, but why hire someone if you are just going to lay him/her off? It doesn't make any sense. This is my favorite paper. The holy grail of places I want to work at. It's sad to see them going through such hard times...

Sorry, guys. Lived in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida and Montana. I'm in California to stay. Does it have problems? Absolutely. But so does the rest of the country. I'd rather deal with these than the ones I ran into in other states.

My parents still live in Stockton despite having three cars stolen, and two neighbors' homes broken into. And they live in a nice part of town, right next to Van Buskirk golf course. Still, outside of the crime, it's an OK town.

Why wouldn't I be surprised? Call me naive (and you wouldn't be the first), but I always thought of journalism as a skilled field. We should be hiring the best people and putting out the highest quality product. That doesn't happen by constantly hiring people who will settle for what papers pay...

New ownership or not, it's still the Merc. I know that's sycophantic, but I love that paper. I got passed over last time. But still interested. Maybe persistence will pay off this time ... Lots to learn here, and its one of the 10 best looking papers in the States.

Actually, never worked at the Bee, just for all the little guys around Fresno. Real estate there isn't awful, but still higher than most places in the country. If you aren't from CA, make sure you don't expect an LA or SF experience. VERY different in Merced.

I used to work for the Turlock Journal when Merced was still owned by Pacific-Sierra. Back then it was the flagship paper. One former SE was arrested for solicitation of a minor. But overall the reporters were good guys, very hardworking (pacifica-sierra tended to overwork people). I don't know...

This is a great point, but the worry about newspapers isn't totally fair. Many are moving toward a strong online presence. We can't all be ESPN, but a serious, diverse online presence makes a big difference.
