The Biggest LOOSER -- running weight loss thread

Not sure if you'll consider this, but nobody is standing over you forcing the CPAP on you. Don't want to use it, don't use it. When I was in the hospital for another procedure (not a stay over), I had five medical people tell me I had sleep apnea. I told them I don't have sleep apnea. I snore...

    2026 World Cup thread

If I was still working, before this event started, I would have suggested to our editors that we make a style ruling on jargon, and make sure the writers got the word. My opinion: quote them accurately, but in text, do it in American English. In a quote, "Spain were awesome." In text: Spain was...

Want to buy a newspaper building?

The weekly Culver City Observer (maybe 5-6 employees) is in the back room of a barber shop. No separate entrance. If you visit, you have to walk through the barber shop to their office.

    Don't blame them, blame soccer.

I felt the Earth move under my feet: a running, shaking thread

Damn, I was encouraged by the previous report that said when the Big One hits, everything west of the 5 would be gone. I live a quarter-mile east of the 5 so I should be OK. I will recount my favorite story about Cal football. The Hayward Fault runs right down the middle of their stadium, end...

Angels closer Kirby Yates ..... . . . . Oh, never mind. IYKYK.

The Open Championship 2026: Crowning the champion golfer of the year

I seem to remember a ball being next to a tree or something. The golfer had to put one knee on the ground for a stance to punch it out. He put a towel on the ground so as to not stain his pants. That prompted somebody to call in.

    RIP Paul Oberjuerge

I thought about that when I first saw the obit on FB (and wrestled with posting about that). I wondered if his column on Penner necessitated his departure to Abu Dhabi. I didn't know him well but we did cross paths regularly covering sports in L.A. Guys I have the utmost of respect for --...

2026 MLB regular season running thread

Seemed like nobody was keeping track of this, including Holland. I was in a small media scrum when it was pointed out to him that he had retired 27 consecutive batters (don't remember how many games it took). "Do I get credit for a perfect game?" he asked. It must have been "81 or '82 when he...

    Greatest opening riffs

A couple of weeks after this thread started, I never would have thought of this, but then I heard it and it seems appropriate:

    What's the tally for Oscar?

2026 MLB regular season running thread

The 4-person pregame show was ridiculous, Rizzo trying to outsmart everybody. The ending of the competition saved the day. And the postgame interview with the winner was pretty good, until ......... . . . . . . . Yep, the Netflix time slot expired in mid-sentence.

    2026 World Cup thread

I'll take an L when I deserve an L. Not this time. I'm not mad, I just view it as apples and oranges. Soccer is vastly different than football, the absurd comparison Inky made. I think he got mad because I brought this up. Half this thread -- by people who are knowledgeable about sports -- is...

    2026 World Cup thread

If I wanted it eliminated in football, I would have posted in the NFL or CFB thread. This is the soccer thread. Check the heading at the top, that's a clue as to what we're talking about.

2026 MLB regular season running thread

Those are the same four saves he had when I made a similar post more than a month ago. But that one was also about Kirby Yates, who blew another save a couple of days ago after needing months to get the ONE he needed for 100 in his career.

President Trump 2.0: The NEW one and only politics thread

Those kids who are waiting for the school bus in the dark, after school, they're out playing baseball until 9 or 10.

    2026 World Cup thread

I haven't posted much here because my lack of soccer knowledge would disrespect those of you who know the sport inside-out. But I think this: eliminate offsides. If a team wants to cherry pick, counterattack the hell out of them. Isn't that the reason for the rule? To eliminate cherry-picking?

Want to buy a newspaper building?

The OC Register building is still standing vacant on Grand Avenue. The old side of the building was leased by Amazon for a distribution center. I don't think it is anymore. I drove past (you can see if from the 5 freeway) and a new warehouse-looking structure was built behind it in a vacant area...

    Random Thoughts the Third

I'm in dreamland. My FB REELS is bring up clips of Kim Alexis interviewing Carol Alt. OMG. Good thing I have two eyes. Amazing that they both were married to NY Rangers named Ron.
