I wrote for a daily paper for two years in Podunk before I was able to find a 9-5 job back home. I happily quit and never looked back. I enjoyed writing and covering teams, but absolutely hated everything else that came along with the job.
I've been freelancing at the local paper here at home...
True. Although with this team they had to win the game to have a shot at the playoffs so they played the regular team. I already did a story on the seniors at the start of the season, so I didn't feel that I necessarily had to get a photo of them again. Whatever. Next time maybe.
Wow, parents are really sensitive about senior night. Got several calls this morning from baseball parents who couldn't believe I put a picture of the other team's pitcher (who threw a complete game in a win the team needed to make the playoffs) instead of the seniors. Sorry? I guess it's a...
Had an angry caller say I was biased and only taking pictures of the quarterback on a certain high school's team. The quarterback who is pretty much the entire team and scores at least three or four touchdowns every week. She claimed the offensive line intentionally didn't block in a game a few...
They told me some line that mileage only counts for places outside of the "normal operating area." Since it's such a rural county it's a very short drive to the school, but that still adds up when I do it once or twice every day.
Yeah, guess it is. When I first started here I was getting paid...
When I first started here I was doing that too, but they told me anything within the county can't be listed as an expense. Said it was "too close."
I'm told the checks normally only take a week. My boss swore he had turned them in and it was corporate's fault, only to find out they were buried...
I agree. Unfortunately I can't convince them. We only cover one school (like I said, pooodunk) so if I just decided to not go it's not like I could fill the paper with another gamer.
Ah, per diem would be amazing. I had that at my last job and I always kept it cheap. Now, if I knew I'd be...
I hadn't heard of gas either. Not at any of the other places I have been. So I'm fine with just mileage. Most of the games I cover are in no further than an hour's drive. These two games are the only exception. And the state championship game, should they reach that...
Thanks for the advice...
Hey everybody. I work at a small newspaper in a rural town in the south. We're owned by a larger company that has papers all over the country. (Although I keep getting emails about shops being shut down, so that's shrinking.)
Anyway, I have questions about how everybody's places handle expense...
