Sports Editor, Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press

Don't think Beard left Tallahassee completely by choice after Gannett bought the paper and made changes he didn't like. Good to see he's getting another chance to run a department. He's a good guy who works hard.

Ever been lied to by your boss? Share it.

Years ago, because of my father's health, I took a job closer to home for a substantial paycut even though the paper was a similar circulation to the paper I left. The sports editor promised 1) they'd pay up to $500 in moving expenses; 2) I could move into an assistant editor position that was...

    Is Gannett really that bad?

I've worked for family owned papers as well as papers belong to the New York Times Regional, Knight Ridder, Harte Hankes (before Scripps bought them), Gannett and now back to Scripps. Gannett was by far the worst at micromanaging and making decisions at the whim of the executive editor. Most of...

Tampa Trib apparently makes deal with Tallahassee paper for FSU coverage

Yes, Tallahassee is Gannett and it took them just about two years to clean out the sports department, which had won APSE and FSWA awards. The only holdovers when Randy Beard was the sports editor are St.Clair Murraine and Steve Ellis and possibly one copy editor. The staff they have in place...

    Layoffs at Ventura County Star

Re: Scripps Just to clarify, yes, Scripps is in the process of splitting into two companies. One would be its cable TV holdings (HGTV, etc) and internet-based business. But the other doesn't just put the newspapers on an island by themselves; it will include local TV stations that Scripps owns...

    Sports copy editor, Tallahassee, Fla.

I wasn't referring to Jim in terms of the editor from hell. I was referring to the editor of the paper from whom you would receive constant meddling and veiled threats when things weren't done to his satisfaction. Jim's an OK sort, but he's rah-rah-rah for the home team.

    Sports copy editor, Tallahassee, Fla.

Stay away ... stay far, far away. The paper has gone in the crapper since Gannett took over and the editor is someone you'll never want to work for. As for the sports section, if you like a rah-rah tone, and lots and lots of space devoted to youth baseball, then it's the hell hole you deserve.

    Prep sports writer, Tallahassee, Fla.

Jimbo left more than a year ago and is working for Don Yaeger, helping him with his book projects, etc. Mary Beth Bishop is the latest writer to give up the preps burden at the Democrat. She did an outstanding job -- as did Jim, and yes, Brian. But Brian never had to survive the Gannett...
