    Random Thoughts the Third

Sometimes I would get a bottle of booze just so I wouldn't feel shame for not using the self-checkout. You know, something that won't go to waste.

2026 MLB regular season running thread

The Angels were 0-48 when trailing going into the ninth. Tonight, it was 2-1 Cardinals. Angels scored twice to win, 3-2. The walk-off came on a bases loaded HBP thrown by All-Star closer Riley O'Brien. He hit two in the bottom of the ninth. Cardinals also blew a 7-run lead Sunday.

    Gotcha. I feel shame.

What TV detective has solved the most murders?

"Murder In Paradise" is a show we like. But, yeah, laid-back Caribbean island of Sainte Marie where somebody gets killed every week.

The Biggest LOOSER -- running weight loss thread

It was a waste of my time, but I, of course, realize that everybody is different. My wife used a CPAP for a while. It blew into my face and kept me awake. A friend I have taken a few road trips with needs a CPAP. At times, the noise of the motor affected my sleep, but so be it. Yes, I know it is...

The Biggest LOOSER -- running weight loss thread

I'll expand on my sleep study. I went to a clinic to spend the night. They wanted me in my usual routine, which I knew wasn't gonna happen. I'm usually up until around midnight and sleep until 8 or 9 in the morning, depending on how quickly I fall asleep. This place had light's out at 10. I...

Not sure if you'll consider this, but nobody is standing over you forcing the CPAP on you. Don't want to use it, don't use it. When I was in the hospital for another procedure (not a stay over), I had five medical people tell me I had sleep apnea. I told them I don't have sleep apnea. I snore...

    2026 World Cup thread

If I was still working, before this event started, I would have suggested to our editors that we make a style ruling on jargon, and make sure the writers got the word. My opinion: quote them accurately, but in text, do it in American English. In a quote, "Spain were awesome." In text: Spain was...

Want to buy a newspaper building?

The weekly Culver City Observer (maybe 5-6 employees) is in the back room of a barber shop. No separate entrance. If you visit, you have to walk through the barber shop to their office.

I felt the Earth move under my feet: a running, shaking thread

Damn, I was encouraged by the previous report that said when the Big One hits, everything west of the 5 would be gone. I live a quarter-mile east of the 5 so I should be OK. I will recount my favorite story about Cal football. The Hayward Fault runs right down the middle of their stadium, end...

The Open Championship 2026: Crowning the champion golfer of the year

I seem to remember a ball being next to a tree or something. The golfer had to put one knee on the ground for a stance to punch it out. He put a towel on the ground so as to not stain his pants. That prompted somebody to call in.

    RIP Paul Oberjuerge

I thought about that when I first saw the obit on FB (and wrestled with posting about that). I wondered if his column on Penner necessitated his departure to Abu Dhabi. I didn't know him well but we did cross paths regularly covering sports in L.A. Guys I have the utmost of respect for --...
