St. Louis Post-Dispatch has two openings

No hires yet. I wonder if the announcement of buyouts this week will play a role in who/when they make a hire.

I heard they made a hire yesterday.

    Design books, websites etc..

Search Newspagedesigner and find a few designers at big papers (I say the big paper guys because they usually have been in the business longer and have more experience) and e-mail them. Start a relationship. Pick their brain. Ask how they did something or how they came up with an idea. If one...

St. Louis Post-Dispatch has two openings

The two people who are leaving's last days are Friday and Saturday. They have one person coming in next week to interview. So I have a feeling they are going to move quickly on replacing them. I'm sure they would like to have someone in place by the start of football season.

    Design thread .... v.2

Was there any discussion to running just one ipod instead of 12? I can't really see what the images are in all 12 of them are, but I'm sure it has to do with who they listen to. But what if you had just one big ipod and put a baseball or the team logo in the screen and then wrapped the text...

All-promo (or very nearly so) covers

I'm actually a fan of the no-story A1. Before my paper redesigned, we did a bunch of focus groups and the one thing the readers wanted was more news on the front. We showed them examples with no stories, stories and a rail, and no rail. The focus groups liked the papers with no stories the best...

Design - The good, bad and ugly

I have two problems with this page: 1. I'm not a fan of using a cutout as your centerpiece. Plain and simple. I'd rather see a dramatic crop, or keeping Tiger in color and making the background black and white, or keep the photo box and have the arm cut out of the top ... just some examples of...

    Photoshop Rules

Anyone ever notice that newspapers are the only publications that still fall under the "you can't touch photos" rules? You telling me that a photographer at ESPN magazine, SI, SportingNews, or any other magazine would have the balls to tell an art director at their magazine they can't crop...

Sorry Pressbox, didn't mean for this to be a personal attack on you.

    Design thread .... v.2

I could care less where the two papers are located. What I have a problem with is stealing an idea and then claiming that you did it yourself. Is it really that hard to say "I saw a page similar to this online and I tried to do it myself, how did I do?" I have three rules when it comes to...

    Design thread .... v.2

I liked the page better the first time when Luke Knox did it a few weeks ago.

    Design thread .... v.2

Thank you. That's what I was trying to get at. This has turned into a "let's critique one guy's pages" thread. The old thread when someone would just post a random page and people would talk about it was a lot more interesting. I say if you want your work critiqued, start a new thread and post...

    Design thread .... v.2

OK, last time I looked, this site was called SPORTSjournalists.com... SPORTS.... Can we cool it with these Local and News pages and get back on the sports?
