He played in two of my absolute favorite movies -- of course, as Johnny Moxon in Varsity Blues, but also as Sean Bateman in Rules of Attraction. This really sucks. RIP.

I lived in Wilmington one year while Dawson's Creek was filming and we're about the same age. I encountered him and other cast members regularly at bars and parties around town and once sat next to him on a flight out of ILM.

If I am being honest, he was my least favorite cast member. Struck my as extremely arrogant. Katie Holmes was a delight. But to be fair he was a huge t.v. star at the time, living in a small town where he couldn't escape that fame.

I never really watched the t.v. show and didn't particularly like Varsity Blues. But I have followed his career - as well as most of the cast - because of that time in my life when they were around. He seemed like he mellowed into a decent guy.

I wasn't part of the Dawson's Creek crowd and never a fan of Varsity Blues, but there's no doubting the effect James had on a lot of people around my age throughout the '90s.

I'm glad he was able to get all his flowers recently, especially with that reunion on Broadway -- with help from Michelle Williams' husband, one of Lin-Manuel Miranda's right-hand men and the director of Hamilton.

I too was in college during a time where my female peers couldn't get enough of Dawson's Creek. Never was my thing.

That said, lord knows I will watch Varsity Blues any and every time I come across it. And I'm not ashamed to say it.

****ing terrible. Folks, get your colonoscopy. Don't know his backstory but it sounds like way too many 40-somethings who (justifiably) figured they were too young to get something like colon cancer. RIP.

I was never part of the Dawson's Creek demographic, but happened upon it while I was home during the day while working desk shifts at night.

I'm under no misguided opinion that it's good (how the **** do they pretend that teenagers even talk like they do?), but I can have that on as background noise all day long when I'm doing mundane household chores and duties.

Discovered fairly recently that the free Samsung TV service has a channel that plays nothing but Dawson's Creek 24/7. We put that on often in the bedroom when we're going to sleep at night.

This really sucks.

I understand not wanting to know but my point of emphasis to all is, you've paid for the health insurance, use it. Which means a colonoscopy if you're at risk (is it still 50 and over? Or earlier now?) or if there's something that's indicating something's wrong.

My understanding is that a young person should never die of colon cancer, it should be 100% curable.

I've got one close buddy in his late 60's who got diagnosed 2 yrs ago and it is not the easiest treatment if you have a particularly aggressive cancer. He's now cancer free and looking much better.

MUCH earlier. Trey Mancini was in his 20s when he was diagnosed during the pandemic. And Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis both had it in their 30s in the 1990s.

My maternal grandfather died of stomach cancer and my Mom didn't go in for her first colonoscopy until 50. Me, my sister and my wife were all recommended to go in our 40s even though my wife's family has no such history and my sister and I were told we were at no more risk than anyone else b/c an immediate relative didn't have it.

The earlier screenings are doubly important b/c once symptoms appear, it's advanced. Former Giants slugger Matt Williams was well into his 50s when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer after a blood test in spring training showed he was anemic. Did a few more tests and found out he had colon cancer. Felt absolutely no symptoms but was told if he'd gotten diagnosed six months or a year later, it probably would have been too late. Probably all sorts of awful **** in the air leading to the increased rates and there's not much we can do about that, but we can do the screenings in our 40s.

I'll admit to getting a little teary-eyed reading some tributes from follow actors following Van Der Beek's passing today. I wasn't a fan of Dawson's Creek right off -- kind of a late comer, but I remember realizing as I watched that there was actually a lot of quality work done by that young ensemble cast. Van Der Beek's performances in the show were understated much of the time, but also very effective, as well as quietly affecting, as the lead character.

RIP, James.

This. I was told “age 45.” I waited a year and a half after that point, and that was nearly a fatal delay. The doctor found four polyps and informed me that I arrived just in the nick of time based on their growth to that point. I’m on the once-every-three-years schedule now, but I’ll gladly deal with it.
